Listen parents. I get it. The stresses of working and raising a family are heavy enough without a pandemic. You’ve all been rock stars navigating between school closings, remote learning, and that terrible crush in your heart you feel for your children who have missed out on a normal school experience.
Ontario school kids have lost 27 weeks of classroom time, which is longer than any other Canadian or European jurisdiction, Summers said. That’s a long time to be without your friends.
During the next few weeks, Omicron will be the schoolyard bully. Teachers, custodians, bus drivers, support staff and, yes, children, are going to get the virus or will have to isolate. Some classes may have to close temporarily and, alas, debates over testing, ventilation, HEPA filters, PPE supplies, and dare I say, a return to remote learning will continue.
Summers said the issue is complex and we’ve learned during almost two years of this pandemic that there are no easy answers.
But the best one, I think, right now, to have some level of confidence in going back to class, is to get your child vaccinated. There’s no reason to wait.
It’s going to be a bumpy ride for a little while, but our kids deserve to be in school.
